Orange juice, without the oranges!
Before we jump into this recipe, I have to give you a disclaimer. This juice is not for the faint of heart—surprise…the main ingredient in this twist on our favorite morning drink is grapefruit (aka a pretty sour and bitter fruit)!
Since I am of Italian descent, I grew up watching my mother eat her fair share of grapefruit while telling me stories of her father and grandfather’s love for the semi-sweet citrus and how it was always included as part of what they considered a good breakfast. Needless to say, I also grew up loving the unique flavor of grapefruit. Because grapefruit can have such an intense flavor, this juice certainly contains some bitter notes, which may not be preferable to some; but I would give it a chance.
Apart from the debatable flavor, grapefruit contains very high amounts of vitamin C, much like the rest of its citrus family. Studies have shown vitamin C may help protect your body from harmful viruses and bacteria.1 Not only that, but grapefruit also contains high amounts of potassium as well, which can drastically improve heart health as adequate potassium can be linked to decreased blood pressure and risk of heart disease.2,3 Combined with the benefits of carrots—which I’ve talked about in previous recipes—alongside the apple and papaya (see recipe below), this juice is unique, bright and jam packed with healthy nutrients. However, if you need a little time to ease yourself on to the grapefruit train, try adding some honey or reduce the amount of grapefruit to one quarter which will offset some of the bitterness.
This one is worth trying—here’s to healthy living!
