What will Carico’s NEW Point of Use filter remove?
The big contaminants in the news lately are PFOAs, i.e., forever chemicals, and heavy metals, especially lead. Carico’s NEW Point of Use filters will greatly reduce, if not entirely remove all the forever chemicals and heavy metals from your drinking water. Nearly everything is not everything, so What Won’t the NEW CARICO Point of Use filter remove?
Carico’s Point of Use Filters will not remove some total dissolved solids (TDS). In fact, the only TDS we do not remove are minerals. For example, we will not remove calcium or magnesium. Calcium and Magnesium are the most common causes of high TDS readings. Calcium and Magnesium pass right through the NEW Carico Point of Use filters.

Remove vs Reduce? What is the difference?
There is no filter that I know of that can “remove” all contaminants from your water. The word “remove” means 100% of everything, whereas the words “greatly reduce” or just “reduce” naturally mean that there is still something in the water supply. If the water test shows a residual contaminant reduction level of .9999% or .9799% that is clearly not 100%. The word “remove” is used a lot in the water treatment industry to explain water filters. It is widely accepted that a removal rate of 99% or better is considered 100% removed. Why Doesn’t Carico use Reverse Osmosis(RO)?
Reverse osmosis has a lot of problems. So many that I don’t have time to talk about all of them, but I do want to mention 3 of them.
First, RO systems waste a tremendous amount of water. If you have watched the news over the last few years, you can’t miss the fact that most of the world is in a drought. The last thing we need to do is wastewater, yet…..for every gallon of clean water, an RO produces, it wastes at least 3 and up to 5 gallons of water…right down the drain. This is called their recovery rate. You can find this in any RO manual.
Second, all RO’s make the water acidic. Drinking acidic water is harmful to humans, our pets and plants…ever hear of acid rain? Acidic water also breaks down the distribution pipes. Acidic water pulls out the chemicals or contaminants in the pipes. Acidic Water is caused the lead to leach into the pipes in Flint, Michigan.
Third, ROs require a lot of maintenance. For example, every RO manual tells you that you need to sanitize the holding tank if the water sits for a week. Some systems require cartridge replacements every 3 to 6 months….and they are expensive.
How much does a gallon of clean, safe water cost?
It is hard to give an exact number but based on the 15” under counter point-of-use filter at a useful life of 3,000 gallons the cost would be around .03 cents per gallon. That is far cheaper than the $1.50 for a 16-ounce plastic bottle, which equals about $12 per gallon for bottled water!
