While we’re quick to purchase organic meats and produce, we often underestimate the importance of the water we drink and cook with. It’s not really until issues like the water crisis in Flint, Michigan that people stop to think, “what’s in my water?”.
Drinking water sources are subject to contamination so the government has developed regulations on the steps required to make water drinkable. Below are the steps outlined by the CDC:
- Coagulation and Flocculation
Coagulation and flocculation are often the first steps in water treatment. Chemicals with a positive charge are added to the water. The positive charge of these chemicals neutralizes the negative charge of dirt and other dissolved particles in the water. When this occurs, the particles bind with the chemicals and form larger particles, called floc.
During sedimentation, floc settles to the bottom of the water supply, due to its weight. This settling process is called sedimentation.
Once the floc has settled to the bottom of the water supply, the clear water on top will pass through filters of varying compositions (sand, gravel, and charcoal) and pore sizes, in order to remove dissolved particles, such as dust, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.
After the water has been filtered, a disinfectant (for example, chlorine, chloramine) may be added in order to kill any remaining parasites, bacteria, and viruses, and to protect the water from germs when it is piped to homes and businesses.
Once the water has gone through all these steps then it is technically considered drinkable, but still has traces of
Chlorine from the disinfecting stage. At this point, it hasn’t even gone through the pipes! Older pipes are often made of iron, steel, or lead whereas modern pipes tend to be made of copper. After the general purification, the water needs to pass through these pipes before it makes it to your tap, picking up metals and sediment along the way. So where are we? Despite government regulations to purify water, we’re still being exposed to chemicals and metals in everyday drinking water. Excessive exposure to these chemicals and metals can cause serious health conditions long term as well as an overall dryness in your skin and hair. The only way to truly guarantee that the water you’re drinking, showering with, and using to prepare meals with is free of these chemicals is to consume bottled water or to install a water filtration system into your home.
In 2012, Americans spent $11.8 billion dollars on bottled water. This pricing is for product purchases alone and has no representation of the damage long term bottle water usage has on our environment. Also, bottle water has no real regulation and requires preservatives to maintain overall shelf life. Juicing and blending has increased in popularity in the recent years as individuals have become more conscious of what they are putting in their bodies. Studies have shown that our diets and the quality of foods we consume can have a greater impact on our weight-loss and overall health so it makes sense that consumers are more conscious.
With the popularity of both juicing and blending, there is great controversy on which option is better for you. While many can argue that juicing removes the necessary fiber we need for greater digestion, it allows for a greater concentration of nutrients to be consumed. Dark and leafy greens that are rich in cellular regenerating chlorophyll tend to have less juice in each extraction but the nutritional values are more concentrated. Therefore, you’re able to consume more highly concentrated juice from a larger quantity of vegetable then you would receive with blending. Additionally, a vegetable like celery is highly fibrous but the juice has great healing properties. Drinking celery juice daily can drastically reduce inflammation and improve overall digestion.
Blending is a wonderful alternative for certain fruit blends that cannot be juiced such as bananas and avocados. It’s also a great alternative for full meal replacement protein shakes and smoothies. All in all, both have their own benefits and are great options to have accessible in your kitchens.

Detoxifying Green Juice
- 1 cup kale
- 2 Swiss chard leaves
- 1/2 cup parsley
- 1/2 small beet
- 1/2 cup pineapple
- 1/2 green apples (use red for sweeter flavor)
- 1 sprig fresh mint
- 1/2 lemon, peeled
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly in your preferred produce wash. Allow to dry. Combine all ingredients in your Juicemaster Professional Juicer. Stir and consume immediately. Juices maintain the most nutritional value when enjoyed immediately after extraction.
Immunity Boosting Carrot Ginger Juice
- 5 large carrots
- 1 romaine heart
- 2 clementines, peeled
- 1/2 lemon, peeled
- 1-inch knob of fresh ginger
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly in your preferred produce wash. Allow to dry. Combine all ingredients in your Juicemaster Professional Juicer. Stir and consume immediately. Don’t forget to use your carrot pulp for a delicious carrot cake (recipe to come).
Banana Ginger Smoothie
- 1 banana, sliced
- ¾ c (6 oz) vanilla yogurt
- 1 Tbsp honey
- ½ tsp freshly grated ginger
Combine all ingredients together in blender until smooth. This is a great recipe for nausea and stomach troubles!
Berry Good Workout Smoothie
- 1½ c chopped strawberries
- 1 c blueberries
- ½ c raspberries
- 2 Tbsp honey
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- ½ c ice cubes
Combine all ingredients together in blender until smooth.
